Getting to Islay is fun – we particularly love the sensation of becoming increasingly remote from our starting point, no matter which route we take. Here are just a few of the important components. There are two car hire companies on the island which can meet you at the airport or either ferry port.

Perhaps the best 2 hour ferry ride in the world, Caledonian MacBrayne provides you with an experience you will not forget. More sailings in the summer than at other times. Always book early – and always check for cancellations or changes. En route look for dolphins, minke whales and strong tea.

The ferry jetty at Kennacraig is approximately 100 miles beyond Glasgow Airport. We always allow plenty of time and stop at Loch Lomond, Loch Fyne or Inveraray, or even take a detour to Kilmartin en route.

The bus is great and leisurely: route 926 from Glasgow. The ferry waits for the bus. It’s very cheap and comfortable.

Logan Air flies from Glasgow, and takes 20 minutes in the air of a 40 minute schedule and can give incredible views – try and get a starboard window seat on the way out.
